So it was unsurprising that Trader Joe's upgraded version of this familiar favorite turned out to be one of the standout dips I tried.

To maintain a through line among different drinks, you need a deeply flavorful base. During the holidays, she often makes cranberry shrub by combining equal weights fresh cranberries, sugar and apple cider vinegar in a food processor. Since the shrub has plenty of acid, you don’t need to add fresh citrus to the drinks you make with it. Another workhorse base is oleo-saccharum, which is classically made by muddling citrus peels with sugar before setting the combination aside overnight. In this flavorful base, the sugar slowly extracts the oils from the peels and the sticky-sweet mixture adds dimension and texture to drinks.

The price of a 10-person Thanksgiving dinner at home is $61.17 this year. AdvertisementInflation-weary Americans are finally getting some relief with the price of Thanksgiving dinner down 4.5% from last year, according to the American Farm Bureau Federation, or AFBF. The average cost of a Thanksgiving meal at home for 10 persons is $61.17 this year as compared to $64.05 last year. A 16-pound frozen whole turkey, which costs $27.35 on average, accounted for 45% of the price of Thanksgiving dinner this year. The fall in the price of a Thanksgiving dinner comes after a cooling in US inflation amid relentless interest-rate hikes by the Federal Reserve.

"Ahead of the holiday season, costs are down for everything from airline tickets and car rentals to toys and TVs," the White House wrote Tuesday on X. This year's Thanksgiving dinner "is the fourth-cheapest ever, as a percentage of average earnings" White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Monday. Nonetheless, the White House is taking a victory lap for the lower year-over-year prices, eager to credit Biden's economic agenda, dubbed Bidenomics, for the good news as the president runs for reelection. That's due in large part to a 5.6% year-over-year decrease in the average price of a frozen whole 16-pound turkey. This could be the lowest price for a Thanksgiving week since 2020, when the Covid pandemic cut demand for travel.

Thanksgiving may be a time for Americans to come together, but opinion is divided over what's on the crowded dinner table. We mostly agree on the deliciousness of pumpkin pie, say, but are split over the eternal turkey question of dark meat versus white meat. Americans 45 or older are especially likely to call turkey the best thing on the Thanksgiving table (39%), while younger adults who agree come in at 24%. One-third of U.S. adults who will celebrate Thanksgiving say that's their preferred dessert. Slightly fewer than half of men (46%) who plan to celebrate Thanksgiving say they will do hardly any or none of the cooking.

Forget turkey. And if we’re talking cranberries, we have to start with Ocean Spray’s canned, jellied cranberry sauce, that jiggly staple of the Thanksgiving table. Somehow this cylindrical blob of sweet, glistening, ruby tartness has become synonymous with America’s most gluttonous day. You know it and love it, unless you hate it, in which case you might use homemade sauce cooked with some of the trillion cranberries that the company’s owners grew. Either way, Ocean Spray wins.

A Thanksgiving dinner this year will gobble up less of your wallet, thanks in large part to lower turkey prices. Almost everything on the Thanksgiving menu is lower – prices for cranberries have dropped 18%. "Consumers who have not yet purchased a turkey may find additional savings in the days leading up to Thanksgiving," the advocacy group said. This is especially welcome news, as turkey prices shot up 50% between 2020 and 2022 – though they remain 30% higher than 2019, before the pandemic, which many consider a baseline. Why are turkey prices dropping?

The cost of turkey represents 45% of the classic Thanksgiving basket of food prices the bureau tracks. "Inflation is still clearly impacting food prices," Veronica Nigh, senior economist of AFBF, said in a press call. People are paying more at the grocery store. Consumers can expect to pay around 20% less for fresh cranberries compared to a year ago while canned cranberry sauce is up 7% from last year, Wells Fargo found. It "might actually be cheaper to go to a grocery store that you're not used to going to," Palmer said.

The American Farm Bureau Federation's annual survey of holiday food prices out Wednesday shows the full spread will run a party of 10 about 4.5% less in 2023 than in 2022. Her analysis, in fact, and the evolution of the farm bureau's Thanksgiving meal prices are a micro-version of the larger pandemic inflation story that households, elected officials and the Federal Reserve have been grappling with. The good news: The pace of change may remain slow going forward, with supply problems now largely sorted out and recent producer price data pointing to modest food inflation ahead. According to the farm bureau turkey prices are likely headed even lower after their survey. "Consumers who have not yet purchased a turkey may find additional savings in the days leading up to Thanksgiving," the organization said in a news release.

While this year’s Thanksgiving dinner is more affordable compared to last year, it is still up 25% from 2019, underscoring price increases since the pandemic. But you can thank turkeys for the lower meal cost this Thanksgiving. “Traditionally, the turkey is the most expensive item on the Thanksgiving dinner table,” Veronica Nigh, senior economist at the AFBF, said in a statement. The Northeast has the most expensive meal price at $64.38 for the 12-item basket. The national average for the Thanksgiving meal was calculated by checking prices in all 50 states and Puerto Rico from November 1 to 6.

MORE THAN PERHAPS any other meal of the year, Thanksgiving dinner remains—for many of us, at least—pretty much a constant. When a recipe simply hits all the right notes, any thought of altering it grinds to a halt for a good decade or so. My cranberry sauce is one such recipe. It’s as simple as cranberries, Port, sugar and orange zest, and so deeply entwined with the thought of Thanksgiving for me that—as if by some edict—I never make it any other day of the year, even though I crave it routinely. It’s not about depriving myself or my family; it’s about nurturing ritual and the taste-memories inherent in it.

New York CNN —Something wild has happened with turkey prices that’s going to make the cost of cooking the Thanksgiving meal more palatable to families on a tight budget. “Because turkey prices are down so much, and that’s the centerpiece of the meal, celebrating Thanksgiving at home will be more advantageous this year for families,” he said. Drop in turkey prices could bring down the overall cost of a Thanksgiving home-cooked mean this year. Food price increases have been easing this year, offering much-needed relief for many households. Canned food is still costlier heading into the Thanksgiving month compared to last year.

Why are cranberry sauce labels upside-down? Science
  + stars: | 2022-11-23 | by ( Jordan Valinsky | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
New York CNN Business —Perhaps one of the greatest mysteries of Thanksgiving is the cranberry sauce — and we’re not even talking about why people eat it: What’s the deal with the upside-down labels on Ocean Spray cans of the stuff? Observant consumers have noticed that the Ocean Spray labels on jellied cranberry sauce cans are flipped, meaning the rounded edge that’s typically on the bottom of most canned goods is on top of Ocean Spray cranberry sauce cans. According to Ocean Spray, that’s intentional: It creates a seamless serving experience. That includes cranberry sauce, whose price is up about 18% compared to last year because cranberry crops are smaller this year, sparking a supply squeeze. The company, which is a farmer co-operative, told CNN Business that it has also has had to hike prices of its canned cranberry sauce, but declined to give a specific percentage.

Leftover idea: Here’s how Acheson turns leftovers into a turkey avocado sandwich as memorable as the feast. Divide and conquerMeal prep is essential to make sure your Thanksgiving dinner tastes great and minimizes waste, says Lisa Bryan. Bryan understands that executing a chaos-free Thanksgiving dinner takes practice.
As food prices have risen, a U.S Census survey showed the share of households reporting food scarcity rising from 7.8% in August 2021 to 11.4% as of early October. As with other goods and services, there is a broad set of forces behind the Thanksgiving food spike. Thanksgiving-related travel this year may at least be cheaper than it was, with airline and fuel prices having declined recently. Discounted turkey prices often lure consumers to grocery stores and supermarkets, and bargains intensify as the holiday approaches. The Farm Bureau noted that frozen turkey prices had fallen to 95 cents a pound as of this week.
The average 2022 cost for a "classic" Thanksgiving dinner for 10 is $64.05, according to results from the American Farm Bureau Federation. The overall average cost of a "classic" Thanksgiving dinner for 10 people, which includes things like a 16-pound turkey and a dozen dinner rolls, is $64.05. The following chart shows how the average cost of a "classic" Thanksgiving dinner has varied over time and just how much it has climbed this year from last year. The other 14 items noted for either a classic or updated Thanksgiving dinner will see some kind of increase in their average price from 2021. People concerned about higher prices on items they need for their Thanksgiving plans may find some deals and sales at stores.
